Tourist information, including walking and cycling routes, is readily available. Also check the website Kop van Drenthe or the Facebook page of Het Schepershoes for activities in the area.
The area around Peest is very suitable for both short and longer cycling and walking tours. Various routes, including the Drenthepad and the Jacobspad, pass through Peest. The Fochteloërveen (crane sanctuary) and the Noordsche Veld (historic burial mounds) are definitely not to be missed. In Norg (2 km.) you can rent bicycles. You can park your bikes in a lockable space with charging facilities for e-bikes.
Peest is also a good base for visiting interesting museums in the area: the Groninger Museum, the Buitenplaats in Eelde and the prison museum in Veenhuizen. Or the Drents Museum in Assen, which includes the 'Largest Doll House' in the Netherlands.
A day trip to Ameland or Schiermonnikoog is also possible. On the way back, stop for fish in Zoutkamp or Lauwersoog?
Garden enthusiasts can enjoy their hearts in various open gardens in Drenthe, Friesland and Groningen. Or browse one of the special nurseries in the North Netherlands, such as: De Tuinen van Weldadigheid in Veenhuizen and Tuingoed Foltz in Meeden.
The garden of Het Schepershoes is a lovely spot to relax after a strenuous walk or bike ride in nice weather. Or: if you simply want to unwind with a good book. In spring and summer you hear the clattering of the storks around our farm.
In autumn 2018 we planted a small orchard in the meadow opposite Het Schepershoes. And a pond was dug to promote biodiversity. The area with the orchard, the pond and the meadow is publicly accessible.

In summer you can rent a boat on the Leekstermeer.
In winter conditions, ice skating at the local ice rink, or take a longer trip. For example, on the Zuidlaardermeer, approximately 20 minutes' drive from Peest.
Golf enthusiasts can visit the Drentse Golf and Country Club (27 holes) just 10 minutes by car from Peest.
Those who enjoy sauna visits can go to Zevenhuizen (Gr.), Peize, or Tynaarloo. Very different sauna complexes, a maximum of 20 minutes by car away.
Attending an outdoor performance at the Shakespeare theater in Diever as darkness falls is an unforgettable experience. Diever can be reached by car in approximately 30 minutes from Peest. For Diever performances, tickets are likely to sell out quickly, so don't wait too long to book if you're interested in attending.
Or visit one of the many seasonal culinary markets and fairs or local producers of vegetables, fruit, meat and dairy. In Norg, Steenbergen Roden, Veenhuizen and Westervelde you will find multiple restaurants, with something for everyone!
